How can I tell if a BDC has been setup properly? Whenever our PDC is down for maintenance or being rebooted, no one can log in. I thought the BDC was supposed to take over automatically. Thanks!

PDC & BDC ? Can you clarfy your network setup.

If you are talking about 2000 native network, then both servers need AD & the GC role to be able to serve while one is down.

This is what I inherited:

We have 9 servers, one PDC, one BDC, one SQL (2k) Server, one Exchange (2k) server and 5 Citrix servers. All run win2k sp3. MetaFrame XP FR2 on the 5 servers. Users log in from any branch office via point-to-point T1s.

Let me know of more gaps that I can fill.

AD is installed on both thr PDC and BDC, but I don't know about GC. How can I tell?

Use the AD Sites and sevices mmc, expand sites, expand (SITE Name), expand servers, Right Click on "NTDS Settings". You will see a box that says "Global Catalog", place a check in the block and that server will replicate the GC role. You should have more than one GC in a AD Domain, and if possible atleast one at each site.

Here's what I found out:

The PDC, which is on one site, has the GC role.

The BDC, which is at another site, doesn't have the GC role.

Is that the cause of the problem?

Yes, but there are no PDC/BDC's when it comes to AD, there are only DC's. Add GC to the DC at the "other" site.
