Backing up of AD /Schema

Hi,

I want to extend the Schema for an SMS deployment, but do not have access to a test network.

Does anyone know how i can back up and restore changes to the schema? and any other tips/best practices that may be associated with it.

Has anybody had problems extedning the schema particularly with the ExtADsch.exe from MS on the SMS disk?

just back up the system state before extending schema. if any fail, u need an authoeritative restore.

Does that need to be done from all the DC's. i.e backing up the system state backup, and similarly for the Authorative restore. (we have 2)

Typically your schema master will also be the first domain controller (PDCe) unless you have moved the role, this will be the best DC to have a backup of the system state from. I would recommend having more than one good backup to hand though.

Thanks for that. I presume you mean 2 back ups say of the last 2 days of the same DC (schema master).

Final question, whats the best method to use to identify if the extention has caused a problem with the Active directory.

Would it be 'in your face' obvious or would i have to use replmon or event viewer or some other utility.

I haven't ever run into any problems when doing this i'm afraid, Exchange installed perfectly. I'm sure someone in the forums will post soon enough with any issues that they've encountered.
