backing up 2000 to a hard drive not tape

Is there software that will backup the user permissions, system state and security to an attached hard drive instead of a backup tape? Maybe this is a silly question and all will do it.
 
If your attached hard drive is recognized from Windows, using built-in ntbackup you can backup to file on this attached drive.

Nt-backup...backs up just the system state (registry, users, groups and permissions) seperate from the files...just making sure.
 
With ntbackup you can back up only System state if you want. It includes registry, boot files and some other components, more here -
I think you cannot back up file permissions separate from files :)

I know this thread is 3 months old, but I thought I'd reply anyway. I stumbled upon BackupAssist, which basically uses ntbackup, but has added more advanced features. Might be worth a look,
