If I am backing up THE backup server (server with Arcserve), does it need a Client Agent? Without the Client Agent, will performance be the same? My understanding is the Client Agent is used to "push" data over (the network) to Arcserve, right? But if the data resides on the local box, than is there a need to push anything?

OR

Is the Client Agent pushing the data onto tape?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

As far as I am aware, the client agent is not needed for a local backup. The client agent will be trying to push across the network.

exactly what fritz400 it totaly correct client agent is distributing the load one remote machine instead on depending on backup server to pull the data.

client agent is a must for remote DR.

Thanks for clearing that up. Now what do you mean that

"client agent is a must for remote DR" ???

I did purchase the DR option, but haven't begun to use it yet. If you can elaborate on DR option (and save me a little reading) that would be GREAT!!!!

You can use full machine backups made with the Client Agent for Windows to restore remote machines with the DR option that is installed on the backup server.
You do NOT need it for local recovery of the backup server with the DR option.

The client agent is used to push data over the network. It's not needed on the local machine.

It is the Client Agent that collects the DR info for the target system. It saves this data to a DR directory under the agent directory. At the end of the backup the agent will send this DR info to the server, were it will be written to a directory under the DR directory in the name of the target system. The activity log will have an entry the the DR info was processed or if it had a problem.

This directory is used during the DR process to create the machine specific diskette.
