For some reason, we are unable to catalog any tapes. The job fails showing 0 bytes written , and 0:00 elapsed time, but it doesn't fail for about an hour.

Error(from application log on server)
Backup Exec Alert: Job Failed
(Server: "SPIN_BACKUP") (Job: "Catalog 0014") Catalog 0014 -- The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding.

Tried online, and searched this Forum for possible answers, tried all the updates, etc. talked about in other threads, and we are still unable to catalog any tapes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Go into Tools, Options, Catalogs, Uncheck Use storage based media catalogs.

Then run the catalog again.

Thanks Justin, it worked!

Another question- can you set up each slot in a changer to be a different media set? We want to be able to set a week's worth of jobs to one tape, then the next week to another tape...etc. We want to be able to do this while still utilizing the changer. In other words, I know we can simply put one tape in the changer, then replace it with another tape for the next week, but that would defeat the purpose of having a changer. The reason I want to do it this way is so we have one week only one one tape only, so that if we have to catalog in the future (for whatever reason) we don't have to put 7 tapes in, and wait for 10 hours for the tapes to catalog. We can catalog single tapes at once.

ANSWER TO MY QUESTION!

It looks like in order to accompish what I want (see above), you just change the append to media time. In our case this time would be 7 days, then it will write to the media specified for seven days, then move to the next tape.
