AVI File sizes in XP - working with >4Gig

I am currently wanting to drop all my vids on to CD. So I first bought an Asus 8200 card hoping its hardware MPEG captrue would work. Big mistake, never managed to get it to work.

I then bought a WinTV PVR card from Hauppauge. I have used WinTV cards for years, ever since they bought out the Prism. Anyway, thats a nother story!

I can now capture from 1 to 12Mb/s either CBR or VBR video, which is great. I have plenty of storage (1/2 Tb) and so used the 12Mb CBR setting to cpature a 2.5 hr vid. This came out at 20Gig (ish, cant remember the exact amount).

Now XP supports >4Gig AVI files, but any time I try and load this in to an editor (tried lots) it crashes. Does anyone know of a video editor I can use with >4Gig files?

Thanks Tim

PS Dual 1.8 MP, 1 Gig ram, 4 WD 120Gig JB drives. Software I have tried is the free editor that Hauppauge does, Adobe Premiere (with an MPEG plugin), ULEAD software. I have also tried to DIVX the files with no luck (it crashed half way through the file)

If your file system is FAT32, you can only have files up to 4 Gigabytes. If you want to store files greater than 4 Gigabytes, you must have an NTFS file system. Just a guess... Chris says: "It's time for a beer."

Thanks Chris. I am running WinXP with NTFS. When ever I try and edit these large video files >4Gig, they cause the various video editing programs I have to crash. I am wondering if this is because they were not designed to work with >4Gig source files or maybe that the Hauppauge card does not record well past 4Gig, although the site/tech support and manual all seem to suggest it should.

Regards Tim

Ok, I figured you knew about the file system limit, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Sounds like a problem with the card if more than one application is failing... Chris says: "It's time for a beer."

Do you use Pinnacle software? I don't know if it handles files as big as 4 gigs but I've manipulated files as large as 2-3 gigs with it. If you're doing a lot of video work that's a good software package to have.

What are you trying to do to the video file, if I may ask?
