Hi All -

I am working to get the correct set up in the 46xxsettings/specials files for the J179 phones and J139 phones to pull the correct SIP information so nothing needs to be statically assigned to the phones. I have review the R11 SIP install guide and several posts on the forum. It is my understanding that I need to first enable the 46xxspecials.txt file in the autogenerated settings, add this to the NoUser source numbers;
CODE -->
ENABLE_46XXSPECIALS_TXT

I did that and then created a new txt file named 46xxspecials.txt file with the following:

SET SIPPROXYSRVR 192.168.2.55 (LAN IP of 500v2)

SET SIPSIGNAL 1 (use TCP)

SET SIPPORT 5060 (use port 5060 for TCP)

I loaded this 46xxspecials to the primary folder in embedded file management.

I have scope option 242 set up in windows DHCP to provide the call server IP and HTTP file server IP (same 192.168.2.55) and that was already in place for the 96x1 phones used today.

I must be missing something because when the phone boots up (it did the upgrade to 2.0 firmware and then goes to 'starting..' but then pops up a window that says SIP proxy list is empty?

What am i missing? Also if we're setting this same thing for a virtual primary server I assume the steps are the same but is there anything to take into consideration for the setup for these phones to fail-over to a virtual secondary server ? Anything special for the certificates?

Any help would be appreciated!

1) You don't need to use the NoUser source number. The auto-generated 46xxsetting.txt file will automatically use the 46xxspecials.txt file if its present on the system (you didn't say but we're assuming that your using the IP Office as the file server for this). [the system will also auto-generate a 46xxspecials.txt file

2) Look at the SIP settings in the auto-generated settings file. You don't need to be adding the one's you've stated to the special file.

3) Find and kill the idiot who thought removing display of which files the phone was loading would make installation/maintenance easier!!!

4) So in the phone's settings has it got the file server address ? (Admin | IP Configuration | Servers | HTTP File Server).

5) Since the settings file tells the phone about the SIP proxies, your DHCP only needs to tell it the file server. Makes life easier and less likely to have errors. [I think that also works for the 96x1s getting the call server settings].

*** Admittedly I'm a fool to myself and just just simple vanilla DHCP and then manually set the file server address. More work but works every time I've found ***

*** Defaulting the phone also often helps and is a must when dealing with TLS ***

Thanks for the reply sizbut. I am using the IPO as the file server. I looked at the Primary folder in embedded file management and I do not see the see the 46xxspecials or j100settings files. I do see them on my PC under C:\Program Files (x86)\Avaya\IP Office\Manager.

Should the settings be in the J100settings.txt file? And do i need to move that file from the folder on my PC into the "Primary" folder on the SD card since that is what we're usign? Also the settings that appear to be missing the SIP Proxy, TCP and signal port:

you can go to the IPO Address/46xxspecials.txt from a web browser and see if it is on the IP Office, it might not show in the primary folder for some reason. same with the j100 text.
Mike

Please, wherever you got that list of settings from, put them back and ignore them - they include things that are incorrect for J169/J179 phones on the IP Office.

Just use the auto-generated 46xxsettings.txt file (yes, you can't see it on the card as it is literally auto-generated when requested and not kept as its contents can change dynamically depending on things like which LAN interface the request on and whether the phone is local or remote).

Your 46xxspecials.txt file needs to go on the SD card in the system/primary folder. When you do that you'll see a GET 46xxspecial.txt line appear at the end of the auto-generated 46xxsettings.txt file.

It's very instructive to look at an auto-generated 46xxsettings.txt file. Just point a browser at your system and enter [Until you put the specials file on your system, the system will also auto-generate one as an example template you can save to use for your own file to upload back once edited]

Thanks sizbut and teletechman. I deleted 46xxsettings out of embedded file management and ensured i could browse to the self generated file along with the J100Supgrade.txt file and added the 46xxspecials as default. I had to set the SIP domain name and SIP registrar FQDN to the IP of LAN1 and uncheck TLS. After doing this i tested a new phone out of the box and it connected (had to say no to auto provisioning or let it time out) and it upgraded and connected and let me log in as the SIP extension and password. All set.

Now I will just need to figure out/test if the phone fails over from a primary server to the secondary server and it looks like the SIP domain name and SIP registrar FQDN need to match on the LAN1 VoIP tab for both primary and secondary and the preference is not to use the LAN1 IP of the primary server but that is all i had to test with to get the J179 phone to come up.

Thanks again!

Hey in regards to that auto provisioning message

## DES_STAT Specifies if DES discovery is to be attempted during the boot process if there is no configuration file server provisioned on the phone.
## Value Operation
## 0 DES discovery is disabled and can only be restored with Reset to Defaults
## 1 DES discovery is disabled
## 2 DES discovery is enabled (default); user prompt is displayed for end user to enforce "DES" or not.
## 3 DES discovery is enforced without dependency on user to select "yes" on the prompt appears after reboot.
SET DES_STAT 1

Sadly for a new phone that only works once the phone has talked to a file server and got the settings file which tells it not to use DES or not. So with a new (or defaulted) phone, you'll always have to deal with getting around the "Do You Want to Activate Auto Provisioning Now?" prompt if you're not using DES.
