Does anyone know why or what a # in front of an extension means?
Running Avaya IPO 500 R8 V2 in BASIC MODE and I can't remove it!

What type of handset. In standard mode you cannot put # in front of the extension number.

Is it a poor man's MWI in the absence of a MWI light. Check any messages in boxes.

Does the issue follow the handset or stay with the port?

There's no point going anywhere. You'll always be here. Try it and see.

running Partner Basic and yes, you're correct it's a poor mans system. He is using every feature, one can use. Just can't figure out why he didn't buy an Essential license.

Depends on what is cheaper... Having embedded edition in place and let the installer be finishe quick or don't pay the license and let the installer struggle a longer time to get features to work basic edition isn't intended to provide ;)

In what context is the # appearing and is it actually causing any problem? Someone may have just programmed it as the extension user name.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

#is not a pound siggn - it is called HASH

£ is a pound sign & does not normaly exist on US keyboards (I guess US is short for UnServicable :) )

I have never used Muppet Mode so may not be able to help much futher (good news I have heard it is being exterminated in V10)

Your description is possibly ambiguous is the # infont of a Extn number or User Number? or is this simply in the dispaly of the handset?

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

Don't Americans say "poundtag" when referring to Twitter posts? ;-)

Now stop, we are not going to have the octothorpe, hash, pound, number, gate, hashtag, tic-tac-toe debate again!

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

On Basic Edition, the system is limited to 48 extensions, numbered 10 through 57. Throwback to AT&T/Lucent/Avaya Partner systems.

The extension numbers that correlate to physical ports will be listed with just their extension number.

Extension numbers that do not have a physical port are mapped, you can use them for "phantom" extensions, like someone who needs a voicemail box, but doesn't have an actual telephone set. These extension numbers are preceded with a # sign.

There's nothing you need to do or worry about.

Well found. I scanned the Based Edition docs this morning and missed that.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

Thanks to everyone that responding!
Touch Tone Tommy had the closest correct answer after talking to Avaya.
During IP Office upload or send file, if a phone isn't plugged in and the extension has voice mail, then the screen shows (In Manager) a # or a hash sign to show a missing telephone.

As To way no essential edition license (EEL) is because the customer purchased the system via Internet and the selling company stated a EEL wasn't necessary. Even after I suggested they call them back and order a EEL the selling company convinced the buyer not to purchase one.
And yes, to all of you who commented about programming, Basic is okay but I personally prefer programming in the Essential Edition or above. I just don't like the Manager interface for Basic programming.

Sizbut, yes it does cause a problem until you do next upload or send file. Because when doing previous send if there isn't a phone then # sign appears in Manager on the next link. If you plug in a phone before a new upload the phone shows a #before extension number on display and doesn't work.

Sorry for the delay to everyone, this cause a lot of frustration at the last minute, when we were leaving at 11:00 PM.
