Hi All

I wanted some guidence on how to intergrate my Avaya IP office 500 with my Data network. My boss has given me an Avaya IP office 500v2 and 5 Avaya 1616 IP hansets to get configured within our network. This is my first Avaya IP office syetem. I more familiar whe the Nortel BCM50.

I have taken the Avaya out of the box and licenseed the unit. I can see the Unit has Lan1 & Lan2. Does this mean I can have My Data Range on Lan1 and the Voice range on Lan2 (This is just a guess, if so How)

My server is configured with a DHCP server, so all clinets recive and IP address. 192.192.10.x The network Switch is a unmanaged Switch and we do not have VLANS. My network consits of 1 SBS server and 5 Users.

what is the best practice for the network side for the IP phones to receive an IP address. Do I use the avaya as a DHCP server.

Thank you

Prash

here is what I would do.

Data network on LAN1
Voice on LAN2.

Make your LAN2 192.168.11.x and set it up as a DHCP server.
Set yout TFTP / HTTP IP to LAN2 IP address and set it to Memory card
Set DHCP for Avaya phones only - in case people decide to plug a PC into the network then it wont work for them

plug phones into your new 192.168.11.x network, allow them to get IP from DHCP, it will upgrade firmware from the SD card.

They will boot up, ask for an Extn. Set one, set pass to 1234 (just what I do)

you should be able to ping between networks as the IPO will route your traffic for you

Be aware that Manager will stop you DHCP server on your SBS server!
This is caused by bootp which is turned on in
Manager.

When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

So, the IPO will serve as a DHCP server for both the data and voice network?

For that size of network and assuming the cabling/network is OK then I would just run it flat and simply allow the server to do the DHCP. You can either enter the scope options to DHCP for the handsets or just statically assign the call and file server and leave the rest as 0's (via DHCP) :)

no, only the handsets on LAN2 will be offered IPs via DHCP. the rest of your data network remains flat.

what Andy says is correct too, but would require you to have some knowledge of windows DHCP server.

this way if your SBS box falls over, your phones will keep working ;-)

No windows DHCP knowledge required you just statically assign call and file server and DHCP will give everything else relevant by default :)

Btw I never have got the IP Office to route properly even with routes or no routes (as it creates it's own) nothing seems to actually get routed :)

andy - if you add a route on your pc - e.g in the above senario

route add 192.168.11.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.10.254 (IP of IPO)

then you can ping LAN 2

put a -p at the end of the above statement and it become persistent

I always assumed it was the default gateway in the pc knacking it, guess it was :)

there is a registry mod that witll stop a Small Business server stioping its DHCP service .
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcpserver\Parameters\
DWord DisableRougeDetection=1

I do not Have A.D.D. im just easily, Hey look a Squirrel!

DisableRougeDetection=1
Not quite...
DisableRogueDetection=1

You can also turn off the BootP server in manager, which is teh root cause of the issue

Take Care

Matt
I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Didn't want to make it to easy did I ;-)

I dont think the problem is restricted to just the Manager app, i think if SBS sees a DHCP reply from the IPO to an IP handset on the network it also shuts down (at least that was the information I had form a customers IT dept that had the problem, but they also said the rogue detection coulnt be switched off :) )
