I'm a Lan Admin Cisco guy and this phone system is all new to me. We are changing all of our IP address subnet ranges and I need some help with changing the IP addresses on the following.

We have a standalone Avaya G350 - S8300 - IA770 VM system that is currently connected to the network for admin access. each of the Avaya G350 - S8300 - IA770 VM currently has an IP address in the same subnet. I have the usernames and passwords for both the G350 and the S8300 and can get to the web interfaces on both. After loading the right version of Java, I can also get to the IA770, but it just asks for SNMP v1 or v3 password info that I don't have. The only place I have found ip information that I could possibly try to change so far is via the S8300 web interface.

Since this is my first experience with this equipment, I need some very detailed help as to how to change the IP addresses for these three components so that it can be successfully properly done. I can also go to and access the console port if needed to aid in making the changes. I don't have access to dialing in via the modem.

If versions or other info is needed for helping with this, let me know. Thanks a bunch.

Here is 3 photos of the equipment

You can bypass the web/SNMP and get to the CLI..
On the G350... (serial interface, bottom row) you can do CLI. The login is root. From there, you can do a CLI: show run. You will reconize these well :). CLI: ip telnet will activate telnet for your LAN access. Whatever, you do, remember to do a copy run start...

** I guess, you want to RE-IP...?? **
I suggest that it would be better if you do that from the AVAYA Communication Manger WIZARD.
Not knowing the version of your Communication Manager Release... I can only give you general directions.
To get to the WIZARD, you must first plug your PC Etnernet port to the S8300 Controller (MGC) service port in slot v1.
Static your PC to 192.11.13.5 and 255.255.255.252
Using a WEB browser, type in into the ADDRESS field.
Remember, you want to RE-IP, so the above is an important first step.

From there login using your user and password.
From there look on the web page for the INSTALLATION link and launch Avaya Installation Wizard...
Note there are some variations between versions, but they are generally the same... in your case you will need 3 new STATIC IP address from the new subnet.

I suggest that you page thur the configuration to make sure you are comfortable with it before making any commitment/changes.. AND NO NVRAM INIT!!. On a scale of complixity... it is easier than CISCO Call Manager Version 6. I am going to be running about the rest of the afternoon, but will check back in after 9pm PST.

Thanks wleong56,
I will give your instructions a try Monday when I return to work. I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this.

Hey wleong56,
I was able to get to the launch Avaya Installation Wizard but then it brings up a screen to put in the root password. I tried "root" "ROOT" and the username & password to login to the s8300, none of them worked. Is there a different standard password for the Media gateway root login?

I also tried to access the serial console port with a standard light blue Cisco serial cable, but got no response from that port.

My reply...
This is your MEDIA GATEWAY root password...
In your terms it is the G350 root password, NOT the s8300...

CISCO light blue cable is not going to work.
You need a REVERSE CABLE... one where pin1 is pin 8, pin2 is pin7, pin3 is pin 6 and so on...

If you find a silver grey, flat cable with RJ45 and a 9 pin connector that would work too. It typically ships with the equipment.

So if my Voice people don't have the root password for the G350, should I be able to call Avaya with my "Sold to number" and get it?

If I get in through the serial console port, am I going to need the same root password, or is the password for the serial port simply the word "root"?

grab a laptop and change the ip of the ethernet port to 192.11.13.5 subnet 255.255.255.252.
plug an ethernet crossover cable into the services port in the S8300 Media Server blade and the other end into the laptop's ethernet port you just changed.
bring up a command prompt and type 'arp -d' and then keep trying to ping 192.11.13.6 until successful.
in your browser go to login with your customer login. (if you don't know this info, this is as far as you can go without contacting your Avaya Business Partner (VAR) or Avaya.)
click on the 'Launch Avaya Installation Wizard' link and go from there to enter new ip addresses. not sure if the IA770 ip is in there or in the 'Launch Maintenance Web Interface' at the Home screen.

the S8300 username/password is not root/root. that is the gateway's login using the rollover cable from the console port of the G350 gateway (G for gateway and S for server) that connects to the DB9 Com port on your PC/laptop.

Note the screen shots above. I got to the 'Launch Avaya Installation Wizard' but the next screen after that is asking me for a root password. Do you know what that would be or how to obtain it?
Thanks a bunch.

'root' or 'rootroot' (maybe 'root1') are the ones that i can give out publicly.

un-publicly, google 'G350 root password issues?'. follow the directions in post #6 making note of proper procedures in post #10 for correct connectivity before implementing instructions in post #6.

If you go thru the serial console port, you will definately need that root password. Typically, a lot of us use rootroot (or rootroot1) as the password.

If your voice people does not know the password for the G350 and if you have mainteannce with AVAYA, then your SOLD TO will get you somehelp.

Frankly, it could be anything (even root1). Do you know who initially installed your system, it is best if you ask them.

Otherwise, there is a password recorvery procedure (as the last resort..) and for that you will need that serial console cable, connector and the procedure <-- important.

I found a recovery procedure on this link... and it looks similar in #6, but the proper proceudre from AVAYA says after the password change, you need to also do a --> copy run start to make it permanent.

Well, I tried all kinds of different possible root passwords via the Avaya Installation Wizard, but was not successful. I tried all sorts of cables with several different pre-made RJ-45 to DB9 connectors and was not able to talk to the serial console port.

I've been looking on line for the pinouts and will use this info to build a cable tomorrow.

It also looks like a company called Cross was the vendor who may have installed our equipment. I will also give them a call in the morning and see what help they may be with getting the root password.

Also the sequence in the backdoor password recovery seems a bit odd to me. Hope it's ok for me to post it here.

The way I see it is the first two lines log you in and puts the system in a mode to receive the password reset command in the fourth line.

Question: When is says to exit and then login again a second time, do you just reissue lines 1 & 2 again for the second login?

After logging in the second time, you issue the command in the forth line with the ???? replaced with what you want the new password to be.

Backdoor for the root password
login: root
Pasd: ggdaseuaimhrke

When you login type exit

Login again and type "username root password {????} access-type admin"
where (????) is the new password.

Logoff and log back in with new password.

The connector is not your typical one. Think LINUX systems. The picture you got on the link above is a good one to make the cable and connector.

Cross Telecom is reputable. Ask them for the G350 MGP (Media Gateway Processor) CLI passoword. Tell the it is the one on the data side, like using show, reset, set type commands.

The following is a link to the AVAYA G350 WEB Page where the documentation is.. document number is 03_300436_5 where the 5 is the issue 5 based upon your CM Software release version.
Read the section on Special Sercuity Features.

Installaing and Upgrading is on this link...
or
And look at Appendix C... that is the Installation Wizard.. that you got briefly got into.

The backdoor procedure can only be done on-site via the serial port (console). AVAYA started publishing this when the G450 came out. Outside, of that, it is not widely know... so I will give you the steps without mentioning the details. I don't feel comfortable displaying it. And yes the first two steps is to set the password change mode followed by the change itself on the repeat. The above you posted is generally correct too.

NB: this will work only from the console with your console cable. Do NOT log out until you change the root password.
1. Login with the following:
Login: <enter here>
Password: <enter here>

2. Type exit

3. Login again with the following:
Login: <enter here>
Password: <enter here>

4. Type the following to change the root password:
‘username root password (????) access-type admin’
NB: (????) is the new password

5. Type the following to save the changes: ‘copy run start’
NB: you only need to run the ‘copy run start’ command on G250, G350 and G450 models

Thanks wleong56,

I will be giving all of this a try in the morning.[thumbsup2]

Well, What an experience this was.[party]
I'm Happy to say it was successful even though I was extremely nervous for my first Avaya G350/S8300/IA770 IP address config experience.[2thumbsup]

I was able to successfully make a serial console cable and I was also successful in using the backdoor change for the root password using the info in the previous part of this thread.[2thumbsup]

I was then able to connect via the Service Ethernet laptop port and use the Installation Wizard to change the IP addresses on the system. I have to say that this wizard thing made me quite nervous[ponder]. I also didn’t realize it would be resetting things during the process and interrupting user service. I was really sweating bullets for a while.[purpleface]

After I got finished with the Installation Wizard, the system didn’t fully come backup and all of the phones were dead with no dial tone[sad]. So after about 5 minutes I just decided to do a power reset, so I pulled the power cord and waited 10 seconds and put the power cord back in. Everything came backup in about 2 to 3 minutes and all the phones had dial tone and the new IP addresses worked.[shadeshappy]

A big, and much appreciated thanks [medal] to wleong56 & PBXTech for providing assistance, help, and info that allowed me to make this a successful experince.[wink][smile2][sunshine]

Congratulations.
Yes, what you describe is normal during an IP change. Now that you done it is not all that hard :-D

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that when doing the Backdoor root password change, the first attempt at issuing the command below indicated it was required that the new password be at least 8 characters long. I just changed:
username root password root access-type admin
to:
username root password rootroot access-type admin

And the newer firmware will require the password to have a numberical in the password string.

After the IP address change yesterday, the users can't access voice mail and voice mails cannot be left. Again, this is a Avaya G350/S8300/IA770 system. I'm not sure where to look to find out what isn't working right after the IP address change to these three components of the system. The proper default gateway and subnet mask was also used when manking the IP address changes via the Installation Wizard.

Let me know if you have any ideas of what I need to check or change.

Thanks a bunch.
