HEllo all,

We are facing dial tone issue with Avaya-1608 phones:

Issue: We have 100s of Avaya 1608 phone connected to our network and sometime we are facing the dial tone issue, we have to try 4-5 times (ex: loud speaker button on and off) to get dial tone on phones, i can say this issue is occurring to some of user(10-20%), i have checked the firewall log and couldn't find any major discard but DNS port 23 to DC server. DHCP has configured on fortigate firewall itself for these phones.

We have checked with the vendor as well but all they say the issue is with firewall policy. could it be port issue?

Could somebody help on this issue.

Thanks in advance
Jassie

Hi Jassie,

When you go off hook on any Avaya IP phone, two things happen:

1. A signalling path (h.323) is established to the main CM Server Processor Ethernet Interface (Procr)
2. An RTP Audio path is set up to a Media Gateway (I am assuming you have MG's, if not then it will be to the MedPro card in your G650)

The media gateways have the DSP resoures to provide dialtone....this is where you hear the tone from

Check what network regions the phones are registered to, they should pick up DSP resources from a MG in the same region, if there are no MG's in the phone region then the phone will get resources from any directly connected network region that has MG's.

If there are multiple gateways around your network, make sure they all have access to you IP phone VLANs
Firewall rules to include h.323 no inspect, plus RTP Audio UDP ports 2048-65535 (this is the full range Avaya can use)

It could also be that you have a faulty media gateway somewhere or more specifically a faulty DSP card on a gateway.

If you do a 'list trace station' on site administration and go on and off hook lots of times until you get the fault, you will see the MG IP address that is being selected for dial tone each time.

Good luck
