He everyone,

I have a problem with CommVault QiNetix 6.1.0 and need some help.
I have inherited a backup server with dual drive tape loader and a disk array.
I need to redesign and reconfigure the backups from scratch. The problem is that there is around 2TB of data sitting on the disk array (current backup uses disk staging). What I need to do is to transfer all this data to a tape. The auxiliary copy doesn’t work as the media pool is completely screwed. Is there any way I can manually copy the data to a tape using QiNetix?
I need to make sure the data is stored on tapes before I can proceed with reconfiguration.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Michael

Hi

Could you give more info as to what you mean by the 'media pool' is screwed?

Misio,

You pretty much have two choices in your current state:

1) Give up whatever is on disk, redo your configs, and take full backups right away

2) Reconfigure the media pool and import/move tapes from the default scratch pool to the media pool you want to use so that the AUX copy will finish. Then you can reconfigure.

The fundamental issue with Aux Copies getting this far behind in a 2drive environment is that copying 2T of data is pretty much going to take the next week or more (way more if you have several storage policies).

I think that in your position (which I have been - several times) I would opt for #1 and get a fresh slate to start from...

Thanks a lot Lord Marshal,

I think you are right. I'm going to reconfigure the Galaxy and start all over again.
Just one more question. If I for example transfer the data to a tape using lets say NT backup, can I somehow restore the data contained within the disk array files? I mean, if in the future I restore the auxiliary folder where it was, will I be able to point Galaxy to it and restore the data?

Again; many thanks.

Michael

You cannot backup CV data with NT backup and restore it with CV.

Bigg22,

Thank you for your reply. However, this is not what I meant. I have got a Galaxy system connected to two disk arrays. Each disk array has been configured as a disk staged device. There is a lot of Galaxy data on it. Now, I need to completely rebuild the system. My question was, can I backup the Galaxy Disk Staged folders, rebuild the system, reconfigure the Disk Staged devices, and put the original contents of the original Galaxy data back into those folders. Will the Galaxy be able to see it?

Thanks again.

Misio

yes...this should work.

Also make sure that if the system being rebuilt is a Media Agent then you also take a copy of the cache index folder (if the indexes are held locally), saves you having to rebuild the indexes from tape.

I'm assuming you probably have 2 magnetic libraries, and then a tape library? If it's just the tape drive pool that is screwed up, why don't you deconfigure, delete, detect and configure the tape pool over again? If that works, you can aux copy from the disk to tape - might save you some time.
