Automated e-mails

Hello we recently installed Exchange server 2003 after using Groupwise for many years. I have an application (WatchDirectory) running on a pc on the network that sends an automated e-mail to a list of about 60 people whenever a specific file changes. This application doesn't seem to work using exchange server. It works if I reduce my list of recepiants to about 9 people. Once I exceed that number the mail isn't sent to anyone on the list. I get the following message in the event log:

An error occurred in the "see"
library. Error Code=-49 - SMTP returned error. 550 5.1.1 User unknown. Location=sendMail (2nd attempt).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

My guess is that it is not the size of the recipient list that is the problem, rather one of the recipients it's email addresses is incorrect. I would say that you had an entry in the recipient list that was incorrect, and by reducing the list you happened to removed the recipient with the incorrect address.

"550 5.1.1 User unknown" is pretty straight forward, the Exchange server couldn't find the user in the global catalog.

Thanks for the reply. You were right. Spelling was the problem. Its the same list Groupwise used, apparently Groupwise delivered to the ones on the list with correct addresses and Exchange failed the entire e-mail.

Great, thanks Janet. Sorry about my incoherent reply I just re-read it and realised how badly constructed it was!

I'm surprised that exchange fails to deliver the email to all recipients when using WatchDirectory. Usually Exchange would deliver to all recipients except the one with the incorrect address.
