i have a linux box that i am setting up as a Samba file server for a client of mine. I want to do an automatted backup everynight.
how would i configure redhat 9.0 to do this or to i need outside software (like veritas)

cost is a concern here as funds for this client are limited to a degree.

you could use tar or cpio within a crone you. Simply create an find string which looks for files, which has been modified since the last 24hour's or XXhours and pipe it into a tar or cpio command.

I've been able to back up small amounts by adding a tar command to the crontab. In my case, it runs nightly to back up an entire directory. It's kind of brute force but it's cheap and works if you have a reasonably small amount of data and a device to back up to.

Look at Storix ( a limited function version is free.
