Hi

I have recently installed a Netware 6.5 server with backupExec 9.1 (Standard version without any extra option). This server is fitted with a Seagate Scorpion 240 Autoloader but it is being recognised as a Standalone Tape drive. The SCSI controller Adaptec AIC 7899 is built in the Intel motherboard. The tape drive is connected at ID 6 and I have turned on Multiplr LUN support for ID 6 in SCSI controller Bios. Can any body advise how can this problem be fixed.

Thanks
Mirza

I would recommend putting the Auto loader on a separate SCSI Bus. If this is not option, then I would try setting the SCSI for the Autoloader to 0 and the tape drive to 1.

The first option will greatly improve your overall backup performance. We have found in the past, that connecting Autoloaders to a on-board SCSI controller is pretty problematic.

You need to tell the driver that the device attached to it has a multi lun device on it - so this this..

on the load line for the scsi card add - lun_enable=ff

restart the server.

then type in:-
scan all luns
list storage adapters - this should list both autoloader and drive - if it does, load up backup exec and see if it detects everything properly.

thanks for the reply but I am little bit confused here. How can I separate the Autoloader and the tape drive. Basically, both are in one, it is just a whole unit. There is only one SCSI connector at the back. I have checked jumper configuration but there is nothing that can separate them in two. Actually I am not sure if these are two thing. It looks like just one tape drive that has tape changing facility. It is Seagate Scorpion 240 DDS4 Tape drive.

Seconly, how can I find the SCSi driver in netware 6.5 server. I mean which file I supposed to put lun_enable=ff in.

Sorry for being so dumb.

OK, an autoloader that is a multi Lun device uses 1 SCSI ID. It then uses 2 LUNS off this SCSI id, usually 0 and 1.
0 being the tape device, 1 being the autoloader.
The autoloader itself will show up as 2 devices.
So for example, if the autloader is set to use SCSI ID 5 - the following is how Netware sees the autoloader.

SCSI ID5, LUN 0 - Tape drive
SCSI ID5, LUN 1 - Autoloader or robot Tape drive

The SCSI card driver usually gets loaded in the startup.ncf - I am not sure of the proper name for the driver - it could be AIC7899.HAM - check for this - it could also be adup160m.ham - it all depends on the scsi card itself.

These technotes may explain things better:-

By the way, the reason Backup Exec can't 'see' your autoloader is you don't have the 'Library Expansion Option' installed. That is required for BE to use the Autoloader/Tape Library.

FYI
You don't need the LEO option installed in Bakcup exec for netware if you only have an autoloader with 1 drive.

Thanks for the information Justin. I was under the impression from Veritas that it's not just the number of drives, but also the number of tapes. If you are using an autoloader for multiple tapes, BE needs the LEO.

But thanks for correcting me.
