Autofilter in Excel - won't appear

Hi all
Since yesterday I can't get the Autofilter to work ie the errors appear in the selected columns, on any of the excel spreadsheets that I use - even a new one one with gook in.
I have done the follow:

Switched the autofilter off
Unhide all rows and columns
deleted any merged cells

The spreadsheets are not linked to a pivot table.

I've tried various things but no luck - any suggestions are greatlyfully received!

what do you mean bby:

Do the autofilter arrows not show or is it that when you filter, you do not see the expected results ?? Rgds

Sorry - I meant arrows (yesterday was not a good day for me)-

The autofilter arrows do not appear at the top of the columns, So I can't even filter.

Extracted from a M$ document:
This behavior occurs when you select the Hide All option, which hides all objects. To see the Hide All option, from the Tools menu, choose Options, and look under Objects on the View tab.

The drop-down arrows used in AutoFilter are objects that are hidden when the Hide All option is selected. Because Microsoft Excel is unable to display the arrows, the AutoFilter command is unavailable.

The problem seems to have cleared since yesterday - but I still would like a solution in case it happens again.

I tried what you suggested - but the icon for the filter and on the menu bar were not faded out when I had the problem over the last couple of days.

It is useful to know about the hide-all feature - thanks for the tip!

Could be that you had "frozen panes" which can have the effect you described. Rgds
