Real easy if your using CS2, or if your using CS1 I believe you need to manually install the PageMaker Plugins.
Generally I setup a 1up ticket, I pdf it and impose the PDF then for numbering I place the imposed PDF back into InDesign but set it up how you will.
Load up excel and for your 8up tickets you will need 8 Columns and the first cell of each column labeled whatever Stack1 Stack2 .. whatever, this will set you up for cut stacks.
Then setup your first entry on Stack1 with whatever you want to start at .. 1
Give that cell Custom Number formatting, pad it with however many 0s you want or whatever Prefix and Suffix you want there. Im sure you can get excel to number how you want..
So for tickets to be QWERTY00000001 make your custom cell format "QWERTY"00000000
That first cell selected go Edit>Fill>Series
Check off Series in Columns and enter in your stop value which would be 2500 in your situation, <ok>
1 Stack done do the rest
Once done save your file as a CVS (Comma Delimited) file.
Back to InDesign
You have your indesign file, toss your 8up tickets on the master, switch to your page 1. Load up your handy tool
Window>Automation>Data Merge
Hit your options pull down on the Data Merge window and "Select Data Source..." now you have your labeled containers for your data listed in the window.
Create a text box(s) on your first ticket where you want your numbering to be and format it how you want. step and repeat it to your other cards. Then start at your first ticket.. Just drag and drop Stack1 from the DataMerge window into your first tickets text box, Second one Drop Stack2.. ect.
Now before I build the final file I usually remove the tickets on the master and create just a numbering file, then I send a Master PDF and Numbering PDF to my rip and it merges them on the fly.. though I dont know what you want to do.. up to you. To build the final file just go back to your DataMerge Pallet and pull down the options and pick "Create Merged Document.."
And for this setup you just need to hit ok on the dialog box that pops up with merge options.
Hope that made sense because it looks really sketchy to me lol good luck.
Cheers
