Does any one know if it's possible to set Windows XP Pro to automatically log-off if no activity has been detected for predetermined period of time?

John

goto Start, Run and type gpedit.msc in the run box, it
will bring up an option list, in the list on the right is
an option to force users to log off, have a play around
with the settings but set a restore point BEFORE you mak
any changes.
I amnt sure if this will work correctly but its a starting place.

Hi,
Just a quick one....does this work by calculating the amount of time the screensaver is active and if it goes over a predetermined amoun of time it logs off?

It uses the native NT API for idle time, an WMI object.
It is actually quite clever.

Thanks for that information.

Kippy13,

The NT shell has various "notions" of idle time. You see a gross readout from Task Manager of the "idle process." Windows Management Information service distinguishes and accumulates information on an "idle" state for its own purposes: there are background processes the Shell wants to launch that are essentially uninterupptible once started. For a good feel for this, see my notes in FAQ faq779-4518

That is why there is an inclusion for interrupting tasks that were started from an earlier idle state; and why a network connection even if active can be viewed as "idle" even though a network monitor would show continuing network activity.

As I said, it is very clever, and there are user definable settings to modify the default behavior. Not absolutely brilliant, but awfully clever.

Hi,

The Winexit screensaver will do the job except that the same old problem comes to light. When the user is only a Domain User the Winexit fails because the users login fails to write to the registry. The following message appears after the pre-determined inactivity time: Error encountered while creating registry key. make sure you have Set Value and Cteate Subkey permissions. Which obviously Domain Users don't have so why do Microsoft design software this way!! If you select <OK> to this message, auto log off works fine!!

Any ideas - and I can't make them Power Users.

John

You use Task Scheduler, and pass alternate credentials.

bcastner,

How would I use Task Scheduler to Auto Log Off.

John

There is a better way than my first thoughts on avoiding registry issues in your Domain setting.

If the users are non-admins on the local computer you must add Set Value and Create Subkey permissions for the group Everyone on this registry key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion

How can I use the WinExit screen saver without granting Admin rights?

Logoff Screen Saver Does Not Function in Windows NT

I apologize, wrong registry key.

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Control.ini

Thanks. I found the resource kit last week. I'll have a play on a test machine and let you know how I get on. I'm very surprised this feature isn't built-in to Windows 2K/XP considering how security conscious Microsoft are.

Thanks for your help.

John

Bcastner,

All seems to work ok. Another problem sorted!

Thanks for all your help.
