Jeff,
Mostly so an outside party can dial into a system and route their own call or use some features such as page. It is a usefull feature where calls are routed from one city to another through leased lines between KSUs. Has issues with hackers. So be carefull if using.

Auto DN will allow outside caller to dial in to switch and dial internal intercom numbers.
DISA DN is required if you wish to remotely page or seize trunk pools.
