I figure this is probably the best place to ask:

I have a remote site. Today the power went down and we didn't know it. I got to thinking that some sort of auto-dialer modem with UPS might be a good thing to have. I thought it might be nice to add more than loss of power such as fire alarm or entry alarm.

Where does one start looking for such a device? How does it work?

Some of the UPS products have a built in alarm device that will dial a number when they see a power problem.

that or an seb, site event buffer, you can get a ups with network and/or analog modem.. simple version is a us robotics, any modem that takes atdt commands can do an auto dial when certain hardware params are met.. google for atdt commands...
