Auto delete old messages 1

Does anyone know how to create a simple group/exchange policy which would automatically delete all messages in every user's Junk E-mail folder (or any other folder for that matter) which are more than two weeks old? I know there are options for specifying how long to keep deleted items, but I'm looking for control over other folders. I guess what I want to do is setup an AutoArchive-like feature without having to go into everyone's Outlook individually.

You should be able to configure the settings centrally using Group Policy. You will need to have the Outlook.adm file to import into a GPO. You can obtain that by downloading the ORK (Office Resource Kit) for free from Microsoft.

Actually, I think I found what I'm looking for here:

Recipient policies let you specify when to delete messages based on age and size on a per folder basis.

Big difference with this and what I suggested is that the Recipient Policy option won't archive the mail. So your users will need to know how to setup a PST file if they need to be able to save anything past the retention point.

Ok...that's good to know. Since all I'm interested in is making sure everyone's Junk E-mail folder doesn't grow out of control, Recipient Policy should work just fine...I don't feel that those messages need to be archived. But thanks for the info...

If you are getting a lot of mail into the Junk Mail folder you might want to look at using IMF to help keep some of that info from ever reaching the user mailbox. IMF is included in SP2.

You will want to "enhance" the IMF experience with a means to manage the trapped messages. You can download my solution from

Thanks...I'll check it out. We are currently running the Trend CSM suite, which has OK but not great anti-spam. I'm intrigued by SP2 but feel kind of like I don't want/need to rock the boat right now by putting in something new. But I'll definitely check it out.

SP2 fixes a lot of problems, it is well worth installing. Don't forget to install it on your DCs too to upgrade your Exchange Tools installed on them.

I'm a big fan of Trend Micro AV, but was dissappointed in the SPAM filtering and found I liked the free IMF better.

I downloaded the .zip file to take a look (I horde everything Exchange). The doc has a July 10, 2005 date on it. It doesn't mention SP2 anywhere (that I could see). Has this been tested against SP2? Have you thought about putting up a info page on your site about this?

Hi Pat, yes it has been tested and works with SP2. In fact the SP level is totally insignificant from the perspective of the application you downloaded since all it does is enumerate the archived email messages in the UCEArchive folder. It would work even if you uninstalled Exchange but still had files in that folder.

I don't have a page on it because I only make the code available to my customers and the users on this forum.
