Attempting to connect to the Internet, whilst offline.

I am perplexed! I've scanned with Norton, PC-cillin and Anti-Torjan, but I cannot find the reason for my problem! Whilst leaving my PC on, certain applications like Windows Messenger, attempt to connect to the internet on their own accord! Also, whenever I open Control Panel or use the Ensure Privacy option on System Mechanic, they also attempt to connect to the Internet!? Can anyone help?
