I just need reassurance that I'm going to do the right thing. I just took out 256MB-CL2-PC133 ram and replaced it with 2-256MB-CL3-PC133 ram to get 512MB. When I did this my ATI card had a fit and went to 16 colors and I could not get the colors back again until I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. I then had problems with memory errors, so I downloaded and installed new chipset drivers for my EPOX 8KTA2 motherboard with the KT133 chipset. I am still having some problems with "Windows Protection Error" when starting up. I restart and it goes into safemode, then if I restart everything is fine, but still a little unstable. I have downloaded the latest ATI Radeon drivers and the updated BIOS for the EPOX motherboard, but I have not installed them yet.

I just want to see if anyone else has had this problem and what you did to correct, because if I don't have to flash the BIOS I will be happier. I have done it several times to various computers with good results, but it is still a little scary everytime I do it, since it could render my computer unbootable.

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

When you went from CL2 RAM to CL3 RAM there may be something you need to change in your BIOS. The speed at which the RAM can be accessed has changed. Quite possibly, your motherboard detected the difference and changed this for you if it can detect the difference. All motherboards are a little different.

If you changed the total value of RAM you may went to change the AGP aperture size in BIOS. I dont know what the maximum recommended is. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks for your reply.

The bios is supposed to do that automatically and that is one of the things the BIOS upgrade would change so it can be done manually. Auto isn't always good.

64MB is what the video card said I should have it on and that's what I've done.

I have installed the updated video drivers but I haven't shut it down yet and restarted. That seems to be when I get the Windows Protection Error, after a cold boot.

Well if it doesn't start up right, I will probably flash the bios tomorrow night.

Thanks again! ggebhart@clover.net

You could check and see if uninstalling and reinstalling the GART drivers for the AGP on the motherboard would help. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
