Assign ip address vlan interface

Recently I read an answer about the use of assiging ip address to a vlan interface.

I was informed about the ip address is for administrative tasks (remote connection). I'm using Catalyst 2900XL

Is this true?

From 8.2.1 (CCNA3) "Each VLAN must have a unique Layer 3 network address assigned. This enables routers to switch packets between VLANs".

Where's the error?

As you know I provided that inital response about assigning a n IP address to a switch's management VLAN.

The quote you've mentioned however pertains to layer3 inter-vlan routing.

Your 2900 doesn't do inter-vlan routing hence it doesn't need (indeed it doesn't support) multiple IP addresses on each VLAN. In fact, if you try and assign multiple IP addresses to multiple VLANs on this switch, you will find it will shut down the other VLANs, i.e. it will only allow one active VLAN with an IP address at any one time.

It's not strictly true that every VLAN needs a unique address assigned. They only need such an address if you want them to be able to communicate with other VLANs. If you don't, then you don't need unique addresses.

To be able to facilitate the inter-vlan routing you've outlined, you will either need a router or higher spec switch that has builtin layer 3 capabilities (such as the 3550).
