Hello,

I'm using a fresh install of Arcserve 2000 (sp2) on Windows NT 4(sp 6b). Using the Arcserve VLDB database.

Backups seem to work correctly and data is merged into the database. I can go to media records and see all the necessary information for each session. However, when I go to restore by session or restore by tree, I can see the sessions, but cannot go any further than that. When I click on the plus sign next to a session (or drive letter), the plus sign disappears, not opening the session (or drive) further.

Restore by query does seem to retrieve the correct data. Any ideas about restore by session, or restore by tree?

Thanks a lot,
Matt

I should also add that I get the following error in the activity log after the merging of the sessions:

E4101 Unable to login to database engine. (DATABASE=ARCSERVE, EC=-2005)

At the start of a backup session I get this error:
E4107 Unable to update job record. (EC=Error Code = 2)

followed by
W3501 Unable to add job to database (EC=2)

Any ideas?

Is the database engine running?

Go into Arcserve Server Admin (from windows start menu) and check the db engine is up.

On the admin menu in server admin check you have set and Arcserve sytem account and that it has appropriate permissions.

Try cycling the db engine and/or all Arcserve services.

Yes, the database engine is definetely running. I checked the Arcserve system account and all seems to be correct.

It does seem to sound like a security or permissions problem. I've checked just about every concievable place, I'm missing something.

Check that in the options for your backup job, on the operation tab, in the Database section, you have Record Detail Information selected.

Yes, record detail information is set.

I'm going to attempt a fresh re-install of Arcserve to see if I missed anything. I will follow up.

Have you selected a "Version" to look at? Usually when I do a restore, and I can't see the files, I choose the correct version from the version history button. Then, everything shows up just fine. I hope this helps.

Re-installed ArcServe. Used account with correct permissions as Arcserve system account. Install SQL backup agent. Downloaded latest version of RegIT, created license files for Arcserve and Backup agent. Upgrade Arcserve to sp2, cracks license file. Recreates license file.

Test backup, causes same exact errors as before.

*Removes hair from scalp. Tries strangling computer. Feels a little better.*

I can get a backup with this thing (or so I hope they are valid. I have no real way of knowing, and a dwindiling confidence in CA), but how much good is a backup if it can't be restored.

I really appreciate the suggestions.

Matt

Aha! that's it.

Under control panel/System/Environment there is a variable named RNNAME. I deleted the value under that variable and it works.

Thanks for the help,
Matt

We have a (very?) similar problem:
- Arcserve AE 2000 SP2 running on W2K
- Can't see the contents of ONE session when attempting to restore by tree or by session (but can see the contents of other sessions, even on the same tape):
= the bottom right window indicates there are 85000 files for ca. 2 GB, but when I click on the machine name, it does not show anything under / (it is a Unix machine), and the top right window says there is nothing to show..
= when I do "restore by query", I can find the file under certain conditions (if I don't specify the path; it turns out the path syntax is a mix of windows/unix, and looks like \\host\/var\spool\mail\... with an unpredictable mix of forward and backward slashes, and no regexp seems to match). Yet when I do the restore, it fails with "AE0059 RootDirectory (/) is invalid."

The backup of that Unix client seemed to have been done correctly (except for 4 files). So I can't understand why I can't see the contents in a normal fashion.

Incidentally, the solution that seems to have worked for Kubilus1 doesn't work for me, we don't have such an environment variable.

, but when I look at the database/media contents, I see all the 65000 files from that session. They don't show in the database/job recording
