hello
i am getting messages similar to this "This is an SMTP protocol log for virtual server ID 1, connection #157. The client at "64.18.1.42" sent a "mail" command, and the SMTP server responded with "501 5.5.4 Invalid Address...this will probably cause the connection to fail"

now in my Access/connection/only the list below
i have 64.18.0.0 subnet mask 255.255.240.0

i'm no tcp/ip guru but i'm thinking that the address 64.18.1.X falls outside that range?
thx

That sounds like it could be a syntax error in the SMTP commands that the remote machine was sending. I've seen that in the 5.5.4 messages before.

That IP address would be in the range if you're using a 20 bit subnet mask like that (if my binary is correct).

thank you sniper
what i've noticed is that it's always from 64.18.1.x
could that be pure coincidence?

No - it could be some zombie machine attempting to spit out a bunch of email. Hard to say.
