This is such a single point of failure with this product there has to be a way...I cannot believe CA would let this be...You should be able to do a restore and skip over the tape 7 and go just to Tape if you knew files names on tape...I do not need to merge or scan I have an intact Database just missing Tape 7 in this set...
Any ideas...
Based upon this, I think NetBackup needs to be looked at....
If the tape is merged into the database already and has not been purged, then data should be able to be restored from tapes 1-6 as well.
You can always try a sequential merge of the tapes prior to the failed tape, and/or try restore by backup media using filters if you know the objects you want to restore.
For what it's worth I don't believe Veritas is any better at handling this than ARCserve.
I already have restored the data from 1-6, 7 is gone and 8-10 has same session info and data as 1-6.
But if there are third party vendors that can recover this, then there must be a way.
I even opened a call with CA with no luck...I mean it makes no sense to have a database with pointers if you cannot recover from this...I am surprised in 2005 they let this happen...This makes tapes as a backup solution no better than RAID 0 on a cheap IDE drive....
Tape is always subject to the tape failing. If every tape is critical you can copy tapes and have multiple copies of the same tapes.
You can also back up to disk first. That way your most recent data is on raid array of disks. If this is older data then that solution wouldn't help you any.
