Hello all,

Can someone explain to me how to schedule jobs to work with the file system devices I created. I have two devices under CA FSAdapter, and each one is a group. Under backup/destination/group=group1(device1), Media=*, Media Pool=Drive1_DLY (I am using GFS Rotation). The backup job runs however I am asked to insert media for the job to start. How do I configure it so that I would just backup to the file system without asking to insert media?

Thank you,

How many backup jobs do you have?

How many media pools do you have?

Also when Bright Stor asks you to insert media what is the exact message?

Regards,
GSC

First off in Device Manager go to Group Configuration and make sure Group1 is the FSD and not tape.

Morning,

First I would like to apologize for not responding back sooner, I was out of town.

GSC,
- I have two backup jobs scheduled to run full daily.
- I have a total of 6 media pools
- Drive1 daily - Drive2 daily
- Drive1 weekly - Drive2 weekly
- Drive1 monthly - Drive2 monthly
- I am going to try the FSD again and do a screen capture and post a follow up to this message.

David,

Yes, I do have Group1 as the FSD.

Don't know if it is online but got this doc from a CA field service guy.

GFS Rotation Jobs on File System Devices

The following procedure will guide you through the configuration of GFS Rotation Jobs using File System Devices.

First, decide which GFS Rotation scheme will be used and determine the number of medias required to use that scheme. For example, a five-day GFS rotation scheme requires 21 media-per-year, and a seven-day rotation requires 23 media-per-year.
For information on calculating the number of media required, see the BAB Administrator Guide/Chapter7: Managing Devices; and Media/Media Pools/Rotation and Grandfather-Father-Son.

Next, create the number of File System Devices required. If you already created enough File System Devices for your rotation scheme and if they are all in the same device group, you can skip this step.
Each File System Device can have only one media, so you need to create 21 File System Devices for a five-day GFS rotation scheme. In order for the GFS Rotation Job to use the File System Devices, all the File System Devices must be in the same device group. By default each newly crated File System Device will be given a unique name and assigned to a unique device group. You can change the names to be the same for all the File System Devices so they will automatically be in the same group.

Alternatively you can reassign the File System Devices into the same device group using ‘Device Group Configuration’.
For information on how to create File System Devices, see the BAB Administrator Guide/Chapter6: Device Configuration/File System Device Configuration.
For information on changing device group configuration, see BAB Getting Started/Chapter 5: Effective Media Management/Device Manager.

Finally, once all the devices have been created and they all belong to one device group, you are ready to submit the GFS Rotation Job. In the Backup Manager, select your source from the ‘Source’ Tab. On the ‘Destination’ Tab, select the device group name of the File System Devices you configured above. On the ‘Schedule’ tab, select ‘Use Rotation Scheme’. In here you can select the rotation scheme desired. Please refer to the following 2 chapters for more details on submitting GFS rotation jobs.
- BAB Getting Started/Chapter 7: Back Up Automatically/GFS Rotations
- BAB Administrator Guide/Chapter 5: Customizing Your Job/Use Rotation Scheme.

I think it may be necessary to format the FS device into the appropriate media pool.

Say that your Device1 is connected to the Drive1 Daily media pool. So for today you would use a tape from the Daily media pool.
When you configure your backup for tonight just compare the name and serial # of the tapes that you have in this (or both) device(s). They should match with what you have in your Daily media pool scratch set. If it does not then you will be prompted for a blank tape (or another that you have in the scratch set)
You should also have this information in the GFS media prediction report, here you find what tape you should mount for your backup.

Hope i understood your issue correct.

Cheers,
GSC
