My company's backup server is an HP Proliant DL 380 G3 and I installed an HP 64-bit/133MHz Dual Channel Ultra320 SCSI host bus adapter to it. I also purchased as my backup devices 2 HP StorageWorks SDLT 320 drives. They are both connected 1 on each channel to the card. My OS is Windows 2003 Server and I use BrightStor Arcserve 11.1 to do the backups. My problem is that the backup process starts fine and goes for about 10 minutes and then produces the error 6304 'unexpected scsi sense code'. This is very frustrating especially the equipment is practically brand new. I feel like it is not a hardware issue and some configuration is causing these errors. I also see error 6300 'Windows NT SCSI port error'. It happens on both drives and I haven't had backups in weeks!!! Please Help.

That Microsoft doc is only for Windows 2003 on a SAN and only if the tape device drivers are loaded, which they should not be.

I fought with this for months. The problem is that the error code is too generic to really tell you what is going on, so it could be many things. I hit the forums really hard, and while the answers I found were thoughful, none of them worked.

Mine was the same problem, the job got 5-10 minutes in and jus t dies with E6304.

In the end for me, it was a bad tape drive (brand new from Dell). We didn't suspect it because we returned the first one and this one was supposed to work.

The easiest way to rule this out for you is to try and identical drive (if you have one) and see if it works.

Good luck--this problem is a real pain.

It seems the root of my problems are the tapes. I started using brand new HP takes and that seems to do the trick. I'll know for sure after a few tests.
