Arcserve Error E8601 - dbasql 1

On one of our servers which runs SQL 7.0 we are getting the following error message in the Arcserve 2000 job log "E8601 Failed to connect agent. Agent = dbasql EC=78)
I used google to search for this error message and found similar error messages with EC = 88 & 402 but not 78.

Has anyone heard of this message ?

EC 78 means that the SQL agent cannot open the SQL Server service; it is trying to determine if the server is running.

I can only think of two things that would cause this. Either there is a security problme or the agent thinks you have a different version of SQL on your machine. I would check the keys under &quot;HKLM \ Software \ ComputerAssociates \ DSAgent \ Currentersion \ agent&quot;. Since you are using SQL 7, the subkey should be named dbasql70. If the key is dbasql@<SOMETHING> and the value SQLServerVersion is set to 0x8 then you have a problem with the installation; the SQL agent installer thinks that you have SQL 2000 installed. This usually occurs if you had SQL 2000 installed on the machine before installing SQL 7.

If the registry keys are correct for SQL 7, then it may be a security problem. I would make sure that the user accounts used to start the Backup RPC Server service (for remote jobs) or the Job Engine service (for local jobs) have enough rights to communicate with the Service Control Manager. You could try changing these services to start using the Administrator account.
