I have a couple arcserve jobs that run to additional media. For instance it has 2 drives it writes to the first two tapes fine. After the first tape finishes the operator inserts the 3rd tape into drive 1, but after arcserve finishes with #2 it will not write to #3 unless it is previously formatted even though its options are set to overwrite all media.

I can't remmber them exactly but you have to make sure you have select the last option for aditional media.

There is something else going on, because just formating the tape is no different than any other tape would be.

mohamdr is talking about the Span option Overwrite Same Tape, Blank Tape, Any Tape.

In this case Same Tape would be a tape of the same name and ID but labeled as seq. # 3.

Is your overwrite all media for both the first and span tapes?
Is this a custom job, GFS, or Rotation?
If custom is media pool used or it?

overwrite all media is set for both the first and span tapes?
this a scheduled job, no rotation
no media pool just full backup each night going to 3 or4 tapes on pc that has 2 drives

Are you reusing tapes?
If so does the old seq # 3 tape work if used?
What is the message in the activity log when it fails to span?
Which version is this of ARCserve?

we are reusing tapes from all over they are all quick erased before being put back in use. the job is set to format and over write any/all media
using aecserve 2000 AE SP5, on windows SP4
you will get the following
ARCSERVE.LOG
5/03/04 3:31:52 114 Please mount a new media to continue the backup.
5/03/04 3:33:12 114 W3831 Unable to find any media.

5/03/04 6:38:19 114 Number of Errors/Warnings: 1/1
5/03/04 6:38:19 114 Backup Operation Failed.

If the tapes are all erased then it would not matter if the job was set to overwrite since all the tapes are blank anyways.

Besides according to the log it did find a tape and continue. We know this because the log says Resume Backup Operation.

But the next this is
E8522 Failed to receive data from the client agent. (EC=1)
So it looks like the problem is the client agent times out waiting for the job to continue.

Increase the timeout for the client agent.
It's a registry setting at the remote system, sorry but I don't remember what it is.
