I am unable to start the database engine service. It will not start through the server admin, I try to manual start through services I get an error 2140. I have tried all the options in dbmgr.exe (repair, initialize, check) and nothing seems to help. I seem to remember this happening to me quite a while ago and I found some info on the internet that said there was another service or something to start first, and then start the database engine but I can find any documentation on it now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

More likely it will not start due to a problem with the Database than another service. It should start without any other service started. For 6.61 there are only four services that need to be running, Job, Tape, Database, and Message engines. The Discovery service does not need to be running.

I had actually stopped all the services, renamed all the database files rdm.chk, raaaaaaa.chg and rdm.chi Then attempted to restart the services and the database engine still did not start. I went to dbmgr and ran the initialize on all the databases and then tried again to start the service and still no luck.

You can just delete those "r" r*.* files. See What are the VLDB File Types? faq478-3985 for details on them.

Next step is to reinstall. Copy your log and queue directories to another location and then after the reinstall you can just copy them right back.

License violation would cause the Job Engine not to start but would not effect the Database Engine.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled and am in the process of copying back the log and queue files. All the engines started after the re-install. Thanks for your help.

the alternative option is overwrite the DATABASE folder with an empty DB which is the original folder after fresh install. if u don't have a backup of it, install the ARCserve on anyother machine.
