APPROACH Automatic Serial Numbering

My Approach has suddenly quit automatically numbering properly. Each day I export and then import new records from one Approach database to another but suddenly the automatic serial numbering feature will NOT update on it's own when importing.

I've checked the field definition and I have to manually change it each time so as to get it to number correctly. Once I change the "beginning" number in the field definition, it will then number properly but I NEVER had to do this in the past.

Any ideas? It's driving me nuts! By the by, I'm running version 9.5 on Windows XP.

Thanks in advance for ANY help with this frustrating problem.

If Approach is part of SmartSuite, not the standalone version, have you installed Patch C? If not, it's in the Free Downloads section at
Make sure you do a Find All before importing to refresh the index.

Approach will only update the serial # field if you don't import it from the source file.

The next serial number is stored in the index (.adx) file. If you're still having problems it may indicate the index file is damaged or corrupted. If no .OYZ file of the same name then try opening the dbf directly, compress it from the new apr then close without saving. Open the normal apr and check the next serial # is OK. If a .OYZ file exists, delete both it and the .adx file. Open the apr and Approach will rebuild the adx. After deleting an adx you'll have to reset the next serial number and any long field names by hand in Field Definition.

Never COULD get the numbering to work properly. Now there's a NEW problem: when clicking on a certain text field (only one field and yes, I've checked the formatting of that field), the entries simply disappear from view. They're still there but you have to click on another field in order to see what's in the PREVIOUS field. Handy...NOT! Kind of hard to do a "Fill Field" when you can't see what's in it! I've uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I'm using 9.5.9906.2304 Stand Alone version which has no patches available.

I don't think it's a video card problem either but who knows?

This problem ONLY happens when on one computer. Same database on two other computers is fine, i.e. all fields show up correctly.
