Applications crash after installing SP3

Friend of mine installed SP3 this afternoon and now can't use any office applications or uninstall/install any programs. It says the windows installer is missing or can't be run in safe mode. But he's not in safe mode.

Is there a way to go in via the recovery console to replace the installer?

I had read earlier today about similar problems with SP1 for XP Pro. Great fix by MS

Did you choose the option to back up for unistall? If so, try booting to safe mode and uninstalling it... Thanks,

If mattwray's option doesn't work, throw the w2k disk in and choose repair to the installer file back. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

Matt, i'll try your way but not sure if he backed up prior to installing.

The file to replace via the console would be msiexec.exe right?
