Hello all

I've been drafted in to a local school to sort out their current network. I have hit a problem with their UPS though where the previous network people did not set the UPS up in Win 2k3. The UPS is an APC Smart UPS 1000VA with a serial cable.

The cable connects fine to the server (I use the term server very loosely here :)) and have detected it successfully in 2k3. I cannot however set any options to do with battery level and the like so if the UPS runs out of power, the server goes straight off!

I have tried searching around for the answer but cannot seem to find anything vaguely useful, any help on this is most appreciated.

Thanks

Have you installed the APC software or just using W3k native? I think you need the APC software (
PowerChute Business Edition for Windows. Should be a free download and install, but you have to register with the APC site - just name, etc.

Has the cable come with the UPS? I have seen this before where we plugged any serial cable into the ups and it powered off 6 servers!! Make sure it is the proper UPS serial cable.

I am just using the standard Power Management tools in windows 2003. I have successfully done this at different sites with the same model UPS and just the standard Windows tools but this particular server does not want to do it.

Yes it is the standard UPS cable that came with the UPS. As I say, Windows detects the UPS and tells me how much battery it has, just I cannot set any levels of battery before the server shuts down, warnings, etc

Thanks for the responses!
