Hello everyone -

We use VB 6 with SQL Server 7 as the database.

The MIS manager wants his manager to be able to use our VB Shipping application, but in an 'Inquiry-only' mode, while the other user would have all the usual update capablities.

Does SQL Server 7 provide any way of doing this -OR- can you suggest any other options I might explore ?

Thanks for any ideas. John

Disallow access by Mr. Read-Only to the table; create a stored procedure that Mr. RO can use to view the records and grant him access to that.

You can always add him to the db_datareader database role which would allow him to read any table, but would prevent him from doing anything else.

If you want your application do know if its a read-only user, then you'll have to deal with it appropriately such as by graying menu items, etc..

Good point, Tom; making him a DataReader and not a DataWriter would be a quick, database-wide way of doing it. For some reason I had it in my head he only wanted this for a single table; your approach is easier and certainly faster for a lot of tables.
