I am a new MCSA and am starting out as a help desk tech. I wanted to ask what software/hardware tools are most useful for troubleshooting problems in a mixed Win2K/WinXP Pro network. Any suggestions as to books or diagnostic boards or software that is worth the money would be appreciated. Also any warnings as to bad proucts to avoid would be appreciated.

The Internet ---Period---

The best resource you can get is the internet, no book or software package can compete. All you need is forums like this for short/long-term reply based results, or a search engine for instance google. There has rarely EVER been a probably I have not fixed by finding a solution on the net. A bit of practice with what *exactly* to put in google for the desired effect and it becomes a very proficient tool!

Well that's my two cents anyway!

I have had outstanding help from this forum, and in most cases very quickly . It is unbeatable and friendly,NO one gives you a hard time for a socalled "dumb" question ,like some other forums. Kelly

MortaR,
Your two cents in this case is money well spent, and I concur whole-heartedly...
Where else are you going to find a needed driver, or a read-me for that driver, or needed specs so you can place jumpers correctly, or...or...the list is just too long...
I have a start page for IE that I keep on my computer that has links to major mfgrs websites (for drivers and such), but at the top of that list is a link to Google (I hate having extra toolbars...I like having the real-estate inside the IE window)
Another good link to use is Ask Jeeves, since you can ask 'plain english' questions, but I don't use it nearly as much as Google

That's excellent advice and has always been an irreplaceable part of repairing any PC. Thanks for taking the ime to write. What I'm looking for is hardware/software/books that can be used on a "dead system" or one that cannot see the Internet. My work is mostly in the field at WAN clients or sometimes small businesses. I've looked at Microscope, several so called diagnostic self booting disks and PCI boards with onboard BIOS and troubleshooting functions. Software problems I can normally fix from what I know or find a fix on the Net. As a new member of this board I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at the level of knowledge and the willingness to help shown here. I thought (per my experience with other Windows boards) that this type of friendly, expert help was only available in the Open Source community. I will try to do my part and help where I can to repay the kindness shown to me.
