I recently had to use the auto reapir option to fix a friend's Win2000 Pro operating system, and it worked, except now alot of the program links are broken and pointing to the wrong places. I think this happened becaue after repairing the OS, it created a new directory that exactly mirrors a prievious directory except one "r" has been added in the directory name. How THAT happened, I'll never know.

Anyway, I am looking for a solution in windows to find and repair the missing links, or possibly a 3rd party freeware or shareware program that will do this. I could probably go in by hand and fix most of the links, but there are so many of them; it would be alot more efficient to have a program that does this. Anyone know of such a program in windows or elsewhere? Thanks!

Do you mean there are now 2 folders, \winnt and \winntr? If so, you haven't got a repair, you've got a parallel installation.

No, actually, it's wierd. There was a folder, under Documents and Settings folder, that was called "Benetta.benetta". Now, after doing the repair, there is still the "Benetta.benetta" folder, but there is also a "Bennetta.bennetta" folder that popped up(I have no idea why). Alot of program files and shortcuts were pointing at the original folder, now they are pointing at the new folder. It is very odd.

Now I'm confused - shortcuts to run apps (eg, the start menu items) point to the location of the app (usually c:\program files\appfolder\appname.exe). Each user has its own start menu. So both your 'benetta' and 'bennetta' folders should have their own start menus - which are used when you log on to user whose profile this is.

So what exactly is the problem? 'Alot of program files and shortcuts were pointing at the original folder, now they are pointing at the new folder.' Program files and shortcuts don't point to folders under Documents and Settings, its the other way round.

What happens when you log on. What is missing/broken. Have you tried creating a new user to logon with?

First I would try running Norton Utilities (SystemWorks 2002 Professional available for next to nothing here, That should repair the broken shortcuts. Re-associating data files with their respective programs is a two step process; a) do a search for a particular file extension, and b) within the search results, highlight one file and in it's Properties change the program that opens it. Windows will then automatically conform the other files listed in that search to open with the same program.
