Just wondering what everyone has implemented to help this. Is there software/hardware that's easy to use? We are thinking of putting some sort of anti-spam mechanism at our ISP to help prevent bandwidth usage. Is this feasible/practical? Any other solutions?

If you'd do a keyword search on "spam", you'll find a lot of information that doesn't need to be duplicated in yet another thread on the topic.

Nope. Just tired of users not utilizing the basic concepts of this site is all.

Posted, didn't think about it, my fault. Sorry to be such an inconvenience to you.

I actually marked this thread for notification, just in case there were any new ideas or products.

Didnt realise it was going to be this entertaining...

;-)

:) Well that's kinda what I was looking for too. I had done research already and just wanted to see what was out there that I might not have seen. Searched on google but way too much to sort through I guess to get to the good stuff. I appreciate this site and the knowledge given and just though someone would have a better idea than I.

The general drift on the exchange 2000 forum appears to be to opt for GFI Mail essentials, they have a freebie download somewhere on their site, sorry I dont have a link without trawling through all the GFI search results

Might be worth having a look at gfi.com, and see if you can find it from their homepage a bit quicker than looking on tek tips. (Saying that, the gfi site appears to be on a go slow at the moment, it still hasnt finished loading yet, 5 minutes on)

Hope this helps

Cheers

Paul

Thanks very much. Just had gotten to their website when I saw that you had responded. Again, thanks.

Actually if you click the FAQs tab at the top of the page right now, you'll see for spam they do reccomand GFI as you have found out.

If you are knowledgable in Linux, SpamAssassin is great product. Filter the spam out before it ever gets to the E2K server.

or

We are running multiple relay/gateway servers that filter for spam and viruses prior to the mail ever reaching exchange... where we check for viruses again with antigen. Sybari ( has added anti-spam into their product. but, I have not tried it.

Has anyone used the Symantec filtering? We have the product but haven't had much luck with it.

A software house rep said that the Symantec anti-spam was not all there yet. He was saying that Trend Micros anti-spam was having much better luck.

We do not use any products at this time to fight spam, so I can not recomend anything. I am playing around with an Event Sink to filter spam but am not having much luck.

Just thought I would through out what the rep said.

If you really want a nice antispam solution, have a gateway box with an antispam software on it. GFI's product has been mentioned. One product I have had experience with and which has worked extremely well for my clients is Mail Marshal.
NetIQ have bought this product and have added even more functionality. It is in 2 versions - smtp and exchange. the first one is to be used in a gateway (my preferred version) and the other as mentioned on Exchange.
What MailMarshal does, is scan incoming email for spam, viruses and depending on your settings, quarantine emails depending on who is allowed to receive what type of emails. For outgoing, it can add disclaimers at the end of the message as well as scan the email before sending it. Also it makes sure no relaying is done.

TrendMicro have some good stuff - the only problem is they are still not as good in detection and the versions I have used recently really could do with better logs/management.
