I have loaded XP on 2 desktops at home and both times the pc did not recognize an ethernet card or sound card. I am doing a complete reload and deleting all on the hard drive. Anyone have any idea why these device are not recognized?
Probably because Windows doesn't have drivers for them. Go to the manufacturer's website, and download the drivers for them Then Once Windows is done installing, you can install the drivers for them.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
I found what I think is the correct driver and extracted it to the hard drive but I have NO idea how to apply it so the pc recognizes it. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
If you go into device manager, you should have a list of hardware installed on your machine. Some of them might have an exclamation or question mark, choose from those, right click on them and click on update driver.
Thne point the wizard to wherever you extracted the drivers to.
Alternatively some drivers run an executable that will ask you to re-start your machine, upon restarting the device should be picked up, and installed correctly.
