Following on from the discussion about amds being value for money , I was wondering what the view is of the AMD sempron processor. The AMD athlon processor is excellent, but looks like they are being phased out in favour of the sempron. Is this sempron processotr as good and reliable as the Athlon XP series?

Cheers

They're the same thing.

On the Socket A side, the Sempron is either the Thouroughbred core (Athlon XP), or the Thorton core (Duron). Same core, just some different specs.

The thing I absolutely do not like about them, though, is AMD totally screwed around with the performance ratings, if you look at an XP 2500+ and a Sempron 2500+, they have the same fsb, but the Sempron has half the L2 cache & a slower clock speed.

Most of the Sempron range is Just the same as a Thoroughbred b cored Athlon with 333fsb.
So if you have the choice, and people are soon going to cotton on!!!! buy a Barton core Athlon whilst you still can! (twice as much L2 Cache)
The reason for all this is AMD wanted to save the "Athlon" naming culture for it's top of the range processors ie:
"Athlon64" phase out the Duron but replace it with a rebadged Thoroughbred "b" enter the Sempron and thus keeping the Athlon name for high end AMD's.
Because Sempron was to be the budget choice AMD aparently picked the Thoroughbred "b" core over the "Barton" based on manufacturing costs!!! Barton is toooo expensive to make as a budget line.
I have used a few Semprons now, as expected they behave just like Athlons but I guess based on the Thoroughbred "b" won't be too popular with the overclocking brigade.
And costing pretty much the same (even a little more at some retailers) than the CPU's they are to replace, I have a feeling Barton core Athlons are going to become hot property over the next few months.
