Hey whats better overall Pentium 4 or AMD (equivilant speed). I was told a 4 1.5GHz was equal to a AMD 1GHz. I need to know....im also looking at that a Pentiums about 3 times as expensive =).

At the moment, on both price and performance, AMD give the best results.

The only argument I can think of for choosing Intel is to keep in with the newer technologies. Since RAMBUS is the main new technology we're talking about, I'd suggest going with AMD ;-).

Things to note:

AMD is hot, It needs some mean cooling (I have an AMD 1.4 G).

Intel, is slower for existing software and needs to be optimised for the Pentium 4. Even PIII optimization does not work for PIV. you will not see P4 optimized software soon.

the choice is your.
I choose AMD.

Hello,
Regarding the heat issues with AMD...
My AMD system has been in "Burn In" for 4 days now, and the CPU's heatsink is cool to the touch. My CPU is a 1,396.5ghz AMD T-Bird (10.5 multiplier, 133mhz bus) better known as a 1.4ghz Athlon.
By "Burn In" I mean the CPU has been running DNETC for the past 4 days, keeping the CPU at 100% utilization.

This is not to say you don't need a heatsink, any modern CPU must have a good heatsink (preferably with a ballbearing fan). And don't forget to use some good heat sink compound. A heatsink does no good if the heat doesn't transfer to it.

If you are a gamer, then AMD is the way to go. If you like to multitask, then the pentiums are better.

My advice, read the reviews and understand how they tested the processors. In all the reviews that I have seen, the benchmarks never tested the processors with any significant multitasking. That is why the AMD's always were better.

Another reason that I went for the P4 is that I heard on the news that there were major layoffs for AMD. I didn't want to take any chances this time around as I laid down quite a bit of cash for my new PC.

I have owned AMD processors in the past, an amd 233 and a k6-2 400. So this is a switch for me.

In the end they are both fine processors, each with there own quirks. Ultimately it is your decision. Personally I tried both processors out (The shop had them side-by-side). In most cases the AMD was faster, but it had trouble when I tried to play mp3's, print out a 20 page report and play a 3d game(I don't know the name), the p4 didn't. Mind you this is by no means a scientific test, but it was enough to convince me to get the P4. Troy Williams B.Eng.

I have a FIC AD11 Motherboard with an AMD 1.2 Gig Athlon with a Raedon DDR 32 MB Video card. It plays games just fine. I also have it networked with 3 computers with a Linksys 5 port Switch and network printing is a snap. I have seen games played on it like Homeworld and Mission to the Moon and it does not slow down. Even when I have 50 to 100 vehicles all moving in different directions with equipment blowing up it still hangs in there. I was using it with Network connection sharing the other day and it was like I was on the other computer with the modem, only faster. It runs about 90 degrees or so. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Doesn't Windows XP take advantage of the Pentium 4, 400 MHz bus speed??? I heard that is does. If it does, it will blow away the AMD.

Er, just gotta say, AMD all the way! AMD's always my choice. The P4 was built for benchmarks, not for practical usage. And it's sooooo much more expnsive. I think there's a better choice of MoBo's for AMD's. OK they're a bit warm, but it's a very small price to pay for a better chip. It certainly looks like most agree with the AMD option. :)

Mark01, I think it's the server version (codename "Whistler") that takes advantage of optimised features of the P4. XP is just NT with a funky GUI, that seems to depend more on the features and power of the graphics card than the processor :)

Why would you want to support Intel? Ever Since the 286 they've been putting out buggy chips, and sueing people that bring good products to the market.

Screw Intel. Buy AMD.
