I am trying to install an AMD Athlon XP2600 CPU on a Gigabyte GA-7XZ motherboard. Previously it had a duron processor installed and worked perfectly. Since installing the XP2600 the PC sounds like it is booting but nothing appears on the monitor ...
Do i need to change some settings on the motherboard to get this CPU to work?

Please help!

Make sure to reset CMOS first (pull power cord out when doing this) its possible that manual settings were used for the Duron that needed to be adjusted, clearing CMOS will shift the board back to Auto. Next check for a BIOS update. IF Bios update exists naturally your going to have to put your Duron back in to Flash the BIOS. I'm assuming that you already checked out any compatibility issues for that board it should work.

If all else fails put the Duron back in, set the Manual settings for your new processor in the BIOS or set it to auto, save settings power down and then try installling the new processor.

Possible Dead processor!

Hope not though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to wait til monday to try though as the pc is in my office.
Can i use the heatsink that came with the Athlon on top of the duron processor? The conductive material on the bottom of the old one may have got damaged when i removed it.

Sure enough! But I would just use the old one. Durons don't have as much a problem with heat as Athlons do. So using the same heat sink for the Duron will be okay.

However when installing the Athlon, see if you can get a hold of some "Arctic Silver" heat compound and use it sparingly. Get rid of the conductive material thats already there on the new heatsink that came with it. (see Lapping a heat sink article)

Athlon's are prone to heat issues Big Time. So use something between the heat sink and processor. Artcic Silver is the best out there and its about 5 bucks for a small tube. Don't use it with the conductive material that is already there. Use it if the heat sink is bare (i.e. ...showing metal).

However if you don't want to go through all that, and not as crazy as I am, using what was provided with the Athlon should be sufficient. I am assuming that the heat sink has a fan on it, and that it came with the processor all packaged.

Hope this helps!

OK = Test OK!
N/A = Not support

Current selling XP2600+ CPU's are all 333front side bus in either Barton or Thoroughbred b core versions.
Your motherboard only supports 200 front side bus AMD socket "A" processors so unfortunately as ski points out, the XP2600+ just isn't supported.
This means in practice the extremely rare XP1500+ (200fsb)is the fastest AMD CPU your mainboard will support.
Alternately the more common Athlon 1400 would be a better bet, obsolete now but a possible second hand purchase.
Must be 200fsb version though!! (Athlon 1400's were also very common with 266fsb as well)

Other common options:
Athlon 1200 also 200fsb
