Hi,

After dcpromo and resarting of the windows 2003 server, the client laptops which are in the domain are unable to access the internet web pages when we are out of our office network.

I'm able to access the web site like yahoo and google using their IP address only.

When i did a nslookup in the command prompt in my laptop, it is still showing my office address.

the tcp/ip is configured to auto detect the ip address and dns.

I have already done ipconfig /flushdns
restarting of client dns service in my laptop which is running on win xp pro sp2.

We are able to surf the websites without problem in the office.

pls advice me on what i should do.

thanks

Are you running a proxy at the office?

No where near enough info to help.

How is DNS configured?
Do you have a proxy set in IE?
Do you have a firewall client installed?
Do you use DHCP or static IP?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Hi

My server is pointing to our ISP dns ip address.

No. we dont have proxy in the office so its not set in IE.

I have symantec client firewall installed in the laptop but the problem persists after disabling the the firewall.

Im using DHCP in the laptop.

Thanks!

Are you sure you have your TCP/IP settings to obtain the DNS servers from DHCP and they are NOT hardcoded?

What you discribe sounds like you have DHCP enabled but are overriding the DNS settings.

BTW, When you say "Off the network", where are you? Do you mean at a users home network? Or at a specific place (i.e. remote office), if its isolated to one place then you need to check the settings on the DHCP server issuing the address.

Hi,

I'm only able to view the websites when i am in the office physically using my office laptop. when i come home and tried to surf the net using the same laptop, i am unable to view the websites. But when i VPN to my office network, i can view it. Alot of my colleagues are having the same problem.

Again I ask about DNS. Are your DNS settings provided via DHCP or are they static?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

It does sound like the DNS servers are set statically, even though the IP is done via DHCP.

Are your TCP/IP settings for the network connection set to get DNS addresses automatically? If not, they need to be.

Yep, sounds like DNS. The reason why you can get to the websites from work and via VPN is that the DNS settings are pointing to the internal DNS which in turn is getting you to your specified sites.

You may still have that static DNS server IP which on the outside doesn't have any representation so your queries are not being answered because it doesnt find a DNS server by that IP address.

take another laptop, or desktop at home and do an ipconfig /all, so you can get the ip information. then take that info and try and hardcode your laptop with the IP address of the DNS server provided to you at home from your ISP. If you give it the static address of whatever that DNS server is and you can get out to the net then it def is a DNS thing.

Hi all,

My tcp/ip configuration dns is set to obtain DNS server address automatically and DHCP enabled. I didnt set the i dns ip to static at all.

I tried to set the DNS sever ip address of my home ISP provider but the problem still exists.

You need to check the DHCP settings you are getting at home. Where is your home DHCP coming from? Local firewall/router? ISP?

My home dhcp is coming from the isp provider.
