We have a very fussy client that requires alt tags on every single image within the site. Is there a way of automatically detecting this, or does it need to be manually checked on each page?

This is a little laborious, but if you use Firefox as your browser and have the web developer toolbar installed (this is available from the mozilla website):
Go to the page you want to check (this is a page by page process, hence my comments above).
On the web dev toolbar in the 'Images' dropdown, you check 'Outline Images With Empty Attributes' or/and 'Outline Images Without Attributes'.
Any such images with appear on the page should have a red border highlighting them.
Hope this helps, it's probably too late now?
Cheers,
Rob
Well, Find & Replace does give you the opportunity to search a whole site/folder/file, so you could try to find:
alt=""
for example. But a) dreamweaver doesn't add an empty alt tag if you insert an image using design mode and b) I can't imagine ever handcoding an image tag and entering 'alt-""' as an attribute...
Probably the best thing would be to go through the whole site using 'Find Next' (F3) looking for:
alt="
That will find all alt tags...if I think of a better way, I'll let you know.
The validator that I pointed to 7th July (above) allows a whole site validation on a single click and will pick up all images without alt tags (and any other validation problems at the same time, as jstreich mentions)

Thanks for all your help. I'll have a go with the validator first. I'm suprised DW doesn't cover this. It is a compliance issue (that's why the client is so fussy).
Many thanks

DWMX has a built-in validator, but you have to run it to find the problems.
If you use DWMX, at the bottom of thedesign/code window, expand the "Results" pane (immediately below "Properties"). Once expanded, you will see several tabs. One of those tabs is labelled "Validation". Click on it.
Now click on the green arrow and select the mode you want to use to validate:
Validate Current Document
Validate Entire Site
Validate Selected Files in Site
Settings...
Choose Validate entire site (depending on the size of your site, this may take a few minutes. In the Validation Pane, your validation errors will appear. You can double-click on the error, and DWmx will take you to the page/line/tag error for you to fix.
DWMX doesn't catch the validation errors until you run the validator. Nevertheless, it is an awesome tool!
