All text is highlighted

Hi, I have a weird situation in Word. I have a user who, when trying to type a new document in Word, has the following happen:

The line of text he types highlights itself and he has to hit backspace and it goes away. This happens again after he starts typing again. He can't see what it is he is typing and is getting extremely frustrated. I have deleted his normal.dot file, but this does not fix the problem. Any suggestions?

Does this happen in both Normal View and Print Layout View? Is the graphics set up for at least 16-bit colour depth? Does he have a dodgy keyboard?

Is scroll lock or center mouse wheel depressed?

could be that the shift key or alt key or ctrl key is locked in its pressed state.
