All clips names replaced with -1 ? 1

Did you move your clips or rename directories outside of Premiere? If so, Premiere should be prompting you for the new locations. Does Premiere prompt you for locations of files it cannot find? Did you doublecheck the timestamp of the project to ensure you indeed did save it?

No, I didn't do any of those actions, just that all my clips and the project file itself are stored on an external disk (Maxtor OneTouch) and sometimes the latter has been turned off (connected via Firewire). Premiere did in fact notify me for not finding the scratch disk and then I turn it on and modify the preferences options.
Quit Premiere and launch it again and then load my project : the timeline is not really empty because you can preview the render clips but every parts of the original clips are gone.
But my main question is : what could we do to recover the work ? (I'm fed up after I restarted the project from zero and it happened again and again).

Just to clarify---the timeline is populated with clips, but what is missing are the original clips that are in the bins? I'm confused as to what you can see and what you cannot see.

That is strange. You have no visual of clips in the timeline OR in the bin(s), yet you can preview the project? For me, when I have moved files outside Premiere, it prompts me for the new locations when I load the Premiere project. Once I give it those new locations, everything is back to normal.
I'm curious if anyone else is having this problem. Do you have space on your internal harddrive to move the entire project as a sanity check? Then load the project from the internal harddrive that talks through the IDE channels? Perhaps the problem is the firewire.
Bottom line, you've got me. Curious to see if anyone else responds with suggestions. I've played with the idea of using external storage devices, this makes me wary.

I had the same problem with Premiere 6.0
Solution: open the corrupt project file in a texteditor and compare it with a non-corrupt project file.
In my case dots were replaced by comma's in the corrupt file.
Settings at the end of the file like:
currentPan=0,500000
nextPan=0,500000
currentGain=1,000000
nextGain=1,000000
vu=0,000000
had to be replaced with:
currentPan=0.500000
nextPan=0.500000
currentGain=1.000000
nextGain=1.000000
vu=0.000000
The same apllies for the setting
rate=100,000000
This setting must be replaced with:
rate=100.000000
This worked for me.

Thank mvanbuul for your reply, but it does not work for me.
Dots were indeed replaced by the commas in the corrupt project file and the problem still remains after I had done all the modifications you mentioned.
The fact is that I had worked on several other projects before and never encountered such a bug until one day ...
I don't neither want to spend a lot of time to see what has been done to the project file. It's a technical aspect that any professional software should deal with seamlessly.

The problem seems to occur with certain mp3-files (not even all). I surely won't use any again!!

I have the same problem with my latest premiere project.
I've saved the project (everything was working fine) shutted down my computer, turned it on an hour later, started premiere again, and,.. bye bye timeline!!!! Also are all files in the bin named: -1. 2 DAY'S OF HARD WORK,..GONE!!! I should sew those guys at Adobe.
But anyway, I've tried the fix tool Commodore1084 advised, but it doesn't work for my file. I did use MP3 files in my project, so the idea of that being the problem does sound quite acceptable.
Anybody any other suggestion? I'd really appreciate it,...

I know: the feeling when you see your project reappear is wonderful, isn't it? For me, only one mp3 was causing trouble and I immediately removed it, so I wouldn't know if the fix program will allow you to continue working with the mp3s that caused trouble before... You could try now that you have the fix anyway...
I just wish I knew of this fix when my previous project crashed just hours before I had to hand it in at a festival!!
I'm worried about the fix not working for oxyz though, but I surely won't try using mp3's again. I also hope the problem doesn't get worse (ie unfixable) when using mp3s-converted-to-wav's or something.
