everytime i enable agp 4x in bios, games will freeze and crash. however, when i set it to 2x, they run fine. any ideas?

Are you running the latest BIOS version for your motherboard, possibly a flash upgrade would help. You do not give much information, to go any further we would need to know make and model of motherboard and video card, OS being used etc. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

sorry. i got a Giga-Byte GA-7VRXP mobo, and a Geforce4 ti4400 vid card. i havnt flashed the bios yet, but i didnt feel there to be a need to.

I assume you have installed the motherboard drivers, as this is a late model board the supplied ones should be up to date. Even though it is new I would still check and see if there is a BIOS update available.
There is a known issue with the 3 way combination of Via chipsets / GeForce video / Win XP. I do not have enough knowledge to discuss this fully as I have not encountered it myself but apparently it is or was a major problem. One fix I have read works in some cases is to reduce the AGP aperture to a lower figure, even as low as 16MB however if you do a search of these forums I am sure you will get a lot more info. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

I also have a ga7vrxp. I can't set my agp to 4x and fastwrite.

I have already updated my motherdrivers and video drivers but still I can't use the 4x and fastwrite.

Motherboard: ga7vrxp rev 1
Bios version: F12

Via Hyperion motherboard chipset drivers 46's?
Nvidia Detonator 43.45's ?
F11 or F12 flash
Latest firmware flash on the graphics card?
Memory problems (try another brand) memory timings set too agressive.
Patches for the offending game?
Martin

Hello. If you want to disable fastwrites, do so at the driver level if the system BIOS level will not let you.

To disable this in the system registry, try editing and finding key(s):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\System]
"ReqAGPFW"=dword:00000000

Also, if you want to set the AGP Rate to 2X manually, you can edit the key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\System]
"ReqAGPRate"=dword:00000002

NOTE: Setting this entry to '4', '2' or '1' will switch between the different AGP-speeds

Good luck!
