Hi,

When I purchase an SQL or Exchange agent license, does that entitle me to backup all SQL or Exchange databases using the agent on multiple servers, or do I need to purchase an agent per server?

Thanks
Mike

Technically you can, if you enter one serial number you can backup as many machines as you want. Being legal on paper or legit is another.

Basically if you had 5 SQL server you would get shippped one serial number that covers you for support and legal license to backup 5 remote sql server. If you add another sql server it will back it up as well and wont complain. You will just be out of software compliance if you get audited, etc

Thanks Steveot,
I'll make sure I just backup the SQL server we're licensed for then. I just wondered because all my W/MSDE databases were showing as available for backup on my media server. I'm surprised Symantec have left it so open though.

cheers

Always seems strange to me, one thing I've never been able to figure is does a SQL or Exchange licence cover the rest of the server. So if you have 4 client licences and 2 SQL licences you can have 6 machines, or is it still just four machines but 2 can have SQL backed up off them aswell.

I believe the agents tend to be sold with CALs which covers the regular BackupExec CAL. The product descriptions usually say MS SQL Agent with Windows CAL and CPA.

So assuming that your license certificate states that it includes a Windows CAL, that would mean 6 machines could be backed up, 2 of which you could use the SQL agent on.
