I am working on a micronpc 700 mhtz with meliinium. when I started most of the drivers had been corrupted. I reformated the hard drive and reinstalled mellinium to factory specs using the micron software. yet the ultimate problem still exists. Four seconds after the boot process is complete the computer powers off and reboots with the commen bad shut down notice and disk check only to repeat the process. I have kept the system on buy keeping it busy yet as soon as the task is finished it powers down again. Yes I have been to the bios directory no use. Have any ideas? it's got me!

My guess is it is ME giving you all the problems. Try putting W2K or 98 on it and see if it still does it. If so, then you know it's hardware related, if not then it's crummy ME.

Seege on another forum there are some of the best on line diagnostic people who have very few ideas. All of thier's at least are of some advice. creighton3. ps not my system. a high priced clone all origional, origional reinstalled software. The system acts perfect until the cpu is idle.
Ps Ps Millenium may be tempermental yet it is also forgiving!

d00d, if you don't think it's helpfull, then don't do it. It was my opion on the information your supplied. Also, if you look beside my nick it says, (technical User) rather than (MIT) or (A+).

** Here is my first thought: The first thing I would do would be to REPLACE the power switch, the ON & OFF BUTTON.
Think about this: By default, at FOUR Seconds of holding down that button, your computer is SUPPOSED to go into sleep mode, that is power off. Maybe it is LOCKED UP ?

NEXT,
You say:

"I reformated the hard drive and reinstalled mellinium to factory specs using the micron software"

and therein, lies the problem, me thinks.

You used Micron software, a modified version of Win ME.
Then, you say that you set it up using Micron Specs.

If I was working on this computer, I WOULD NOT use the Micron version of ME.
In fact, I would not use ME at all. However, if your have your heart set on using ME, I would use a MS original ME disk, not one hacked up by a factory.

*** KEY POINT: Then, I would use NEW DRIVERS for ALL THE HARDWARE on that computer:
CHIPSET ON MAINBOARD
VIDEO
SOUND

This could be a hardware issue. This would eliminate the software as an issue.
It may be a bad mainboard, which is just speculation.

You also say it only happens when the computer is idle. Check to make sure that there is not a setting checked to put the machine in standby when idle for a few minutes.
There are lots of places that have little setings like that. The email program can be set to check email, and shut down the machine when finished.
Power management as well allows going into standby, and standby is designed for laptops, and on some vomputers does not function properly and shuts down instaed.

Sorry seege it was late and I am still frustrated. The fact that the system only powers down when the cpu or system becomes idle has to be indication or symptom of the cause. Keep the ideas coming. Thanks creighton. P.S. the millenium is integrated in the micron software. and yes I have shut down all unnecesary programs using ctrl-alt-del. No effect. I will bypass the on-off.

Is ok Creighton3, I know what computer problems can do to a person. too bad MS didn't include a hammer with Windows. :)

I don't like the fact either that PC manufacturers, HP & Compaq & Gateway being the worst, take Windows - and hack it up, then ADD A TON of garbage code to it, and make it more unstable, and less reliable, just so you can be bombarded with "trouble shooting links" and lousy PHONE home to Compaq garbage.
They really, really make it much worse.

> I'm curious to know the resolution of this problem though.

I'll keep thinking about it, and check back in.

System reboots and turns on by itself,This problem can occur if you have wake on lan enabled in the bios of your motherboard. You can either disabled the wake on lan feature found mostly in the Power Management section of the bios setup or you may choose to pull out the wake on lan cable that connects from your network card to the motherboard.

I'm trying guys.....

I think futuretech is right, it sounds like Power Management is screwed up. Go into the BIOS and turn off all the power mgmt. features. Then go into Windows Control Panel, Power Options, and set it to Always On and see what happens. Also see if Micron or the BIOS manufacturer has any BIOS updates available. One, more thing, ACPI and APM require drivers to work; did you completely get rid of all the corrupted drivers?

I had a similiar problem a while back; the machine would go into sleep mode after 2 minutes and never come back. It was a bad BIOS version that was capable of activating sleep mode but not coming out of it.

Hey hackers. answers: I completely wiped everything by reformating. The pc is a year old (did work well)but had the problem before the system wipe. As well as alot of the drivers were corrupted. The mouse pointer only came up in safe mode yet the pc would normally boot in normal mode.(prior to wipe)

I'll see the pc tomorrow I have a stack of ideas to add to the stack ive tried all ready this is one I'll hold in the annal's of pc hell. See ya wed or thurs. Creighton3

ps please if you have Ideas of keeping the cpu busy so I can prolong the four seconds I have to watch it shut down again.

Hi creighton3,

Power supply— My sister had this very same problem. Everything your describing describes my sister's computer to the T.

It was like Poltergeist. Don't know if this is your PC’s problem though. Hopefully not. Cause it fragged her processor, memory, and the bearings in her CPU fan. It would run with a new power supply Ok... well sort of-- files would install currupted, it would hard freeze everytime we had it do something that required muscle like burn CD's and browsing the web. Finally through trial and error, we stuck the memory and processor in other machines and scanned it and ruled out it had problems. We concluded it got fragged by the power supply. My sister wasn't too happy about this since it was her first PC. I was honest with her and just said it happens.

However, it might be worth ruling out. It was a weird thing I tell you. This isn't just logic talking, it freaked everyone out including A+ certified techs. It has earned the name psycho PC on our network:-)

Good Luck,
jade>(::O>

If you want to keep the CPU buisy grab a copy of SETI@HOME http;//wetiathome.berkeley.edu. I use it a lot to test a system, and it does a good job at keeping CPU usage close to 100%

Thanks guys. Creighton3 I'll thread soon.
